8 Nuggets of Improving Productivity

8 Nuggets of Improving Productivity

Thoughts of Life !

Many people move through life working in circles, releasing so much energy each day, yet the results they produce hardly match the effort they pour out. In my earlier write-up on being busy but not productive, I explained how we often expend so much energy and still have so little to show for it. In this reflection, I want to show how these eight nuggets provide a clear pathway out of that cycle and into steady, meaningful results.

The first nugget is understanding that procrastination begins in the mind. Your brain avoids discomfort, not the task itself. When something feels overwhelming, start with two minutes. As many psychologists say, “Action reduces fear.” A small start weakens the mental resistance.

The second nugget is breaking big work into smaller tasks. Large tasks feel threatening to the brain, but when you break them down, they lose their power. Commit to five minutes. That little opening often becomes momentum.

The third nugget reminds us that our environment shapes our focus. Physical triggers like opening your notebook or placing your laptop in front of you can gently pull your attention back to the work that matters.

The fourth nugget is resetting your workspace. A cluttered table breeds a cluttered mind. When you clear your space, you clear your thoughts. A fresh desk often ushers in a fresh sense of direction.

The fifth nugget highlights the strength of routine. Good habits anchor your day. When you stack a new habit on an existing one, you create a rhythm that supports your goals instead of draining your willpower.

The sixth nugget deals with emotional barriers. Many wait to “feel ready,” but readiness is often found in motion. Start small, and motivation will follow behind you like a shadow.

The seventh nugget is letting go of perfectionism. Perfection slows progress. Start where you are and improve as you go. Growth comes from movement, not flawless beginnings.

The final nugget is forgiving past procrastination. There is no value in dragging yesterday’s failures into today. Success leaves clues, and each day offers a clean page.

If you have ever felt busy but not productive, these nuggets will guide you toward clarity and purposeful action, helping you finally get things done.

These applications cut across all facets of business, work place and even personal projects.

We improve by learning and rise by practicing.

 *Don’t Be Everybody’s Friend*

 _Thoughts of Life!_

“I’m not here to win the love of people but to do the will of the One who sent me.” —  John 6:38

Many leaders lose their true purpose the moment they begin to live for applause and try to please everyone. This was the exact comment of Jesus Christ, stating His purpose and we are expected to emulate Him under this very context.

A leader who tries to be everybody’s friend slowly dilutes the very authority they are meant to carry. Friendship is warm, but leadership demands clarity, courage, and conviction. When you become overly concerned about being liked, you start bending your standards just to keep people comfortable. Over time, those blurred boundaries weaken your influence, and the people you are trying to please begin to take your role lightly.

The truth is simple, you don’t need their approval to lead them. You just need direction, purpose, and the courage to stand firm. Not everyone who follows you will like you, and that is perfectly fine. What matters is the impact you make, not the applause you receive.

Scripture gives a clear example. Jesus, who healed the sick, fed the hungry, guided the lost, and showed compassion at every turn, still faced rejection. The same people He blessed were the same ones shouting, “Crucify Him.” This alone should assure any leader that rejection is not a sign of failure. It is often the price of purpose.

Emotional intelligence in leadership means you understand this reality without letting it crush your spirit. You stay steady even when misunderstood. You remain focused even when criticised. You don’t personalise every reaction. You simply keep leading. I have written an article on emotional intelligence. Feel free to visit my blog and read it again to see how it can strengthen your leadership depth and personal influence.

Stand firm. Make the hard decisions. Care for your people, but don’t become trapped by their opinions. A leader’s worth is proven by results, not by how many people call them friend. Let your work speak, let your values guide you, and let your impact speak.

Invest in Knowledge, Your Most Valuable Asset.

_Thoughts of Life!_

Yesterday, I counselled a young woman who has been struggling with her business. After reviewing her submission, I realised she was focusing most of her energy on activities that brought her the least profit. It immediately reminded me of the 80/20 Rule. From a place of knowledge, I taught her how to apply this principle for her business to grow. Coincidentally, I had just shared a piece on the same topic, and it turned out to be exactly what she needed. That is the power of knowledge. I learn as well, because every time I research in order to teach others, I grow too.

Knowledge is the only form of wealth that no one can steal, diminish, or destroy. It grows with every page we read, every question we ask, and every skill we practice. People are obsessed with quick success and often forget that knowledge predates wealth. The fortunes people admire today were built on ideas, insight, and understanding long before they became numbers in a bank account. Yet many want the rewards without the learning, comfort without the effort. It's like the destination without the journey.

Investing in knowledge is a lifelong commitment. It doesn’t always require a classroom or a certificate. Whether learning is formal or informal, structured or self-taught, what matters is the hunger to know more. Read widely. Study deeply. Listen to others. Seek new experiences. Every bit of understanding you gain expands the world around you. The more you know, the more you can imagine, create, and achieve. Skills are not just tools for survival; they are bridges to opportunity. They help us shape our future rather than wait for one to be handed to us.

I study because I want to grow. I research because the world is too vast to settle for what I already know. And I share knowledge because it loses nothing in the giving; it only multiplies. My hope is to encourage others to do the same, to see learning not as a burden but as a powerful form of self-investment. The young woman I mentioned had actually seen my piece but never read it, never realising it could help her. That is life, we often overlook the very things that can benefit us. We must learn to read, to rekindle the habit of reading, and to encourage our children to read and write as well. When we commit to understanding more, we elevate ourselves. We become adaptable, confident, and capable of turning ideas into action.

If we truly want progress, if we hope to build meaningful lives, we must cherish the one asset that appreciates endlessly; knowledge. When you invest in it, you invest in your future, your potential, and your power to rise.

Overcoming Emotional Barriers as a Leader

_Thoughts of Life !_

As I reflect on the word emotion, I remember my first experience working after graduating from school. One thing I learned quite early in life was to reason with my head rather than with how I feel. The workplace has no room for negative emotions, they can easily spread and pollute the environment, affecting teamwork and productivity.

Emotions are part of being human. They guide how we think, act, and relate to others. For a leader, whether in business, a team, or any workplace, emotions can be both a source of strength and a stumbling block. The way a leader manages feelings like fear, anger, pride, or doubt can shape not only their own path but also the mood and success of their entire organisation.

A leader who lets frustration or fear take charge may struggle to make fair or wise decisions. When emotions cloud judgment, communication breaks down, trust fades, and teams lose direction. In business, this can mean lost opportunities, damaged team relationships, and low morale. Even the Bible reminds us, “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32). True strength lies not in control over others, but in control over oneself.

Overcoming emotional barriers begins with awareness. A good leader does not deny emotion but learns to understand it. As psychologist Daniel Goleman wrote, “If your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions... you can’t get very far.” It takes honesty to admit when fear drives decisions or when pride blocks collaboration.

Practical steps help. Taking a moment before reacting, reflecting through journaling, or seeking counsel from a trusted colleague can turn emotional tension into clarity. Mindfulness and empathy are also powerful tools, they help leaders stay calm under pressure and connect deeply with others.

Finally, Leadership is not about being emotionless; it’s about mastering emotion. When leaders rise above their emotional barriers, they create space for better judgment, stronger relationships, and lasting growth, for themselves and those they lead.

Control Your Environment

_Thoughts of Life!_

I have personally observed the lives of many people we consider leaders in their respective fields, and one thing they all share in common is control. This word control is both profound and powerful, for every true leader must exercise it in order to lead effectively. Dangote stands as a great example today because he understands how to take control, in every area of his business and beyond.

In life and in business, one truth is certain, if you don’t control your environment, it will control you and controlling you is subjecting you in every way possible. Every great leader understands that power begins with awareness. To control your environment is not about domination; it is about direction.

Control starts with understanding what you can and cannot influence. The wise knows this fact.  Reinhold Niebuhr said, “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” In business, this means identifying the forces that shape your market, competition, customers, and culture, and deciding how to respond instead of merely reacting.

Boundaries protect progress. A company without principles loses its way just as a person without discipline loses peace. Proverbs 25:28 reminds us, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.” True leadership begins with self-mastery, controlling habits, emotions, and the physical spaces that either support or sabotage success.

Taking action turns control from idea to reality. Plans mean little without consistent steps, regular reflection, and adjustment. Monitoring progress keeps your purpose alive, while balance ensures that control does not become obsession.

Change is constant. Those who embrace it, instead of fearing it, remain in charge of their destiny. Every conscious choice, how you spend time, who you listen to, what you tolerate, either strengthens or weakens your authority over life’s environment.

To rule your environment is not arrogance; it is stewardship. It is reclaiming the personal and spiritual power God has given you to “reign in life” (Romans 5:17). Whether in business or in the control of your mind, the message is clear: rule your space, or be ruled by it.

You can only rule a kingdom you have taken control of. It's time to rule your business space, spiritual Territory, mind, and your entire eco system.

Strategic Business Principle: The Strategy Loop

In a modern business setting, strategy is not a one-time event but a continuous process of disciplined learning, adapting, and improving. Great organizations understand that success is not built on a single plan, but on a living loop of reflection, action, and evaluation of strategy. This is the essence of what can be called The Strategy Loop,  a principle deeply inspired by Dr. W. Edwards Deming’s famous PDCA Cycle (Plan–Do–Check–Act), which revolutionized quality management and continuous improvement.

By Deming’s insight, every organization should operate within a self-correcting loop. First, plan carefully based on facts; next, do put the plan into practice; then check, evaluate results and measure outcomes; finally, act, take corrective actions and feed that learning back into the next plan. It is a perpetual motion of strategy and learning. As Deming wrote, “It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best.”

The Strategy Loop reflects this same disciplined journey through five key questions: Where are we now? (Assess), Where do we want to go? (Define), How will we get there? (Plan), What must we do? (Execute), and What worked or didn’t? (Measure). These are not just managerial questions; they are the heartbeat of sustainable business growth.

To begin, a business must assess its current reality. This means facing the truth of where the organization stands in its market, what its customers truly think, and how effectively its resources are being used. This phase demands honesty and courage. A company that does not know where it stands cannot decide where to go.

Next is definition , define the focus by setting a vision and clear objectives. A strategy must define purpose. Vision provides energy and direction. Without it, even the most hardworking teams lose focus. The define stage is where leadership sets out the destination: what kind of growth is desired, what market share to capture, what values to uphold.

The planning stage ,this is the bridge between intention and achievement. Planning is about designing the pathway: allocating resources, identifying risks, setting timelines, and aligning people. It is the stage that translates a dream into a roadmap. Deming’s wisdom applies here: “If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you are doing.” A clear plan turns vision into executable process.

But a plan without action is a fantasy. The execution phase brings strategy to life. This is where discipline, teamwork, and accountability matter most. Execution is where strategy meets reality, where ideas must survive the test of practice. Every successful organization recognizes that performance depends not just on ideas but on people who act with precision and consistency.

Finally comes measurement. This stage, too often neglected,  separates wishful thinking from genuine progress. Measuring performance reveals what worked, what failed, and why. It is the foundation of improvement. By collecting data, reflecting on results, and learning from mistakes, a company re-enters the loop stronger, smarter, and more aligned with its purpose.

The Strategy Loop is to emphasize continuous improvement, the principle that excellence is not an end state but a habit. The loop strategy achieves consistency, agility, and growth by ensuring that every action leads to learning and every result feeds the next plan. It transforms business strategy from a static document into a living system of progress.

Applied to business growth, this loop is invaluable. Scaling a business requires more than ambition; it requires a process that can expand without losing quality. The Strategy Loop provides that structure. It ensures that as an organization grows, it learns from each iteration, refining its methods and strengthening its systems. From startups seeking market fit to established firms entering new territories, this cycle fosters adaptability,  the single most powerful advantage in today’s competitive world.

In everyday business practice, the loop is equally useful. Managers can apply it to marketing campaigns, product development, employee training, and brand management. For example, in brand building, assessing current brand perception, defining the desired image, planning communication strategies, executing creative campaigns, and measuring market response form a continuous brand-growth cycle. It ensures the brand stays relevant, trusted, and emotionally connected with its audience.

In real life, the loop mirrors human growth. We all assess where we are, define our goals, plan our actions, execute them, and reflect on the outcome. The businesses that grow are those that repeat this human process at scale,  learning, improving, and never standing still.

Business managers should apply this principle because, it creates resilience. It replaces reaction with reflection, chaos with control, and uncertainty with learning. The Strategy Loop turns management into mastery by embedding discipline and adaptability into every level of the organization.

As Deming taught, “Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion.” The Strategy Loop ensures that business decisions are guided by knowledge, not guesswork. It teaches leaders to think strategically, act deliberately, and learn continuously.

Ultimately, strategy is not a straight road,  it is a circle of growth. Each loop makes the organization wiser, more focused, and more prepared for the next challenge. In the words of W. Edwards Deming, “Learning is not compulsory... neither is survival.” The Strategy Loop, when practiced with purpose, ensures that a business not only survives but thrives constantly improving, scaling, and leading in its industry.

*Taking the Right Initiative*

*Taking the Right Initiative*

 _Thoughts of Life!_

As I reflect on the word initiative, I realize that not everyone possesses this quality; it is, in fact, quite uncommon.

In every successful business, organisation, or team, there are always a few people who stand out, the ones who don’t wait to be told what to do. They see what needs to be done and take action. That quality is called initiative, and it’s one of the clearest signs of leadership. As author Stephen R. Covey wisely said, “Initiative is our ability to act rather than be acted upon.”

Taking the right initiative means not just acting fast, but acting smart , in ways that help the organization or the people around you. In business, it’s what drives progress. Employees who take initiative help solve problems early, improve teamwork, and create new opportunities. Leaders who encourage initiative build stronger, more confident teams and ensure success in the organisation.

However, initiative must come with understanding. Rushing into action without the full picture can cause confusion or mistakes. Sometimes, in workplaces with strict rules or poor communication, people fear that taking initiative might upset their superiors. That’s why the right initiative requires both courage and wisdom. It means acting with respect, awareness, and a sense of shared purpose.

To develop initiative, start by being curious. Ask questions. Look for ways to make things better. Volunteer for new challenges. Learn from each experience, whether it succeeds or fails. And if you are a leader, create an environment where people feel trusted to act.

In life and business, initiative turns ideas into reality and dreams into results. It is the spark that fuels innovation, progress, and personal growth. Taking the right initiative doesn’t just move you forward, it inspires others to move with you.

Most people are afraid of taking Initiative especially when the environment is hostile, but it something that should be encouraged, well communicated with clarity as good leader and team player.

*Self-Regulation: The Art of Keeping Yourself in Check*

 _Thoughts of Life!_

Self-regulation is one of the greatest strengths a person can develop in the journey of life. It is the quiet discipline of managing one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions to remain aligned with purpose in achieving vision whether divine, business or life generally.

To regulate oneself is to take responsibility for one’s actions and reactions, to pause before responding, and to ensure that decisions are driven by reason rather than impulse. It is the difference between reacting in haste and responding with wisdom.

Our world is filled with distractions, pressures, and provocations, altercation (people blood dey hot now); self-regulation becomes the compass that keeps us steady. It helps us avoid the traps of excessive anger, rash decisions, or careless mistakes. When we learn to control our emotions, we protect our peace of mind and preserve our focus on what truly matters. Excellence is not born out of chaos but from calm, deliberate effort. By keeping our emotions and attitudes in check, we cultivate the consistency and balance necessary for success.

The Bible reminds us, “A person without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls” (Proverbs 25:28). Without self-regulation, we become vulnerable to the forces around us, anger, pride, fear, and distraction. But when we master ourselves, we build inner walls of strength and wisdom.

As the philosopher Epictetus said, “No man is free who is not master of himself.” Self-regulation safeguards our vision and reminds us to stay focused on the bigger picture. When temptations or frustrations arise, it is self-discipline that steadies our steps and keeps our eyes on the goal.

To live with self-regulation is to live with intention. It means monitoring one’s life, thoughts, and emotions to ensure alignment with purpose. It is not about suppressing feelings but mastering them; not about perfection but progress. When you learn to put yourself in check, you unlock the strength to lead your life, not be led by it. Self-regulation is, indeed, the foundation of a life in order and on purpose.

*Lean Principle in Business: From Reducing Waste to Creating Lasting Value*

 _Thoughts of Life!_

The business world is very fierce and competitive. Success is no longer defined merely by cutting costs or eliminating waste, that was the old order. In crises, most business managers think cutting cost first but the reality is that, there is a strategy way better than cutting cost which is; creating genuine value that resonates with customers.

This is the essence of Lean strategy, a principle that has revolutionized industries by shifting focus from internal efficiency to external impact. In essence, Lean is about understanding what truly matters to customers and aligning every process, resource, and decision to deliver that value with excellence. Sales keep business alive.

The journey begins with identifying value, seeing through the eyes of the customer and understanding what they truly need and are willing to pay for.

Once value is defined, organizations must map the value stream, tracing every step of the process from conception to delivery. This process reveals inefficiencies and waste that dilute quality and delay outcomes. By eliminating these non-value-adding activities, companies can redirect their energy toward what truly drives growth.

Creating flow is the next crucial step. When operations run seamlessly without interruptions or delays, both productivity and product quality flourish.

Establishing pull ensures that production is driven by real demand rather than speculative forecasts, allowing companies to respond swiftly to market needs while minimizing excess inventory. This alignment between process and purpose fuels agility and resilience, two traits essential for survival in a constantly changing marketplace.

Lean thinking, however, is not a one-time strategy but a mindset, a culture of continuous improvement. When embraced deeply, it encourages innovation, teamwork, and accountability at every level of the organization. As management expert Peter Drucker once said, “Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.” Lean brings these two forces together, ensuring that every effort contributes directly to customer satisfaction and sustainable success.

The story of Toyota stands as a testament to the power of Lean.(The Toyota Way by Jeffrey K. Liker)

By embedding these principles into its production system, Toyota not only revolutionized manufacturing but also set a global standard for quality and efficiency. Its success reminds us that Lean is not just a process, it’s a philosophy of respect for people and commitment to excellence.

In the end, Lean is more than a method for reducing waste; it’s a way of thinking that inspires businesses to do better, serve better, and be better.

By focusing on value creation, organizations can build stronger relationships with their customers, empower their teams, and achieve growth that endures. In an ever-evolving marketplace, the companies that thrive are those that see Lean not as a cost-cutting exercise, but as a path to lasting value and meaningful progress.

Quiet Growth: Building Before You Shine

*Quiet Growth: Building Before You Shine*

Thoughts of Life!

Our world is obsessed with so much noise and showmanship. The true path to greatness is often hidden in silence. Many want to shine before their time, yet the Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that “to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” When you show yourself too early, you expose your dreams to the winds of distraction and envy. Every great destiny has an incubation period, a time of learning, building, and growing in secret. Just as a house without a solid foundation cannot withstand the storm. Success without preparation cannot endure the test of time.

We live in an age where many measure success by noise, not by impact. Some with a little wealth shout to the world that they have arrived, forgetting that true wealth is silent. As Dr. Cosmas Maduka once said, “Real wealth doesn’t make noise, it makes impact.” Proverbs 13:11 teaches, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” Quiet progress, guided by knowledge and discipline, is far more powerful than loud appearances without depth. The danger of forced glory is real. Rising without foundation leads to a fall before the race even begins.

Great wealthy men are not just wealthy themselves but they create wealth that last generations by leading people and showing them the way. As they say, follow who know road. Jesus didn’t just feed the disciples fish; He showed them where to cast their nets (Luke 5:4–6). That is knowledge guiding blessing. True greatness is not in impressing people but in lifting others, in teaching them to fish, in building a community where many rise together. L

Life is not about parties or fleeting applause, it is about legacy, impact, and obedience to God’s principles. Stay calm, stay grounded, and let your growth mature in silence. When your foundation is strong, your shine will last, and your success will speak for itself. We are truly lifted by lifting others. As we reflect on this piece, are you part of the system that wants to subdue rather than lift? meditate and ask God for direction. Nobody can stop you except you stop yourself. Humility, discipline and knowledge are what you learn in the school of incubation; so to truly shine and be the eagle. People should see you as the eagle not you telling them you are the eagle. Your values, impact will speak ahead of you.

We improve by learning.

Happy New month.
