*Don’t Be Everybody’s Friend*
_Thoughts of Life!_
“I’m not here to win the love of people but to do the will of the One who sent me.” — John 6:38
Many leaders lose their true purpose the moment they begin to live for applause and try to please everyone. This was the exact comment of Jesus Christ, stating His purpose and we are expected to emulate Him under this very context.
A leader who tries to be everybody’s friend slowly dilutes the very authority they are meant to carry. Friendship is warm, but leadership demands clarity, courage, and conviction. When you become overly concerned about being liked, you start bending your standards just to keep people comfortable. Over time, those blurred boundaries weaken your influence, and the people you are trying to please begin to take your role lightly.
The truth is simple, you don’t need their approval to lead them. You just need direction, purpose, and the courage to stand firm. Not everyone who follows you will like you, and that is perfectly fine. What matters is the impact you make, not the applause you receive.
Scripture gives a clear example. Jesus, who healed the sick, fed the hungry, guided the lost, and showed compassion at every turn, still faced rejection. The same people He blessed were the same ones shouting, “Crucify Him.” This alone should assure any leader that rejection is not a sign of failure. It is often the price of purpose.
Emotional intelligence in leadership means you understand this reality without letting it crush your spirit. You stay steady even when misunderstood. You remain focused even when criticised. You don’t personalise every reaction. You simply keep leading. I have written an article on emotional intelligence. Feel free to visit my blog and read it again to see how it can strengthen your leadership depth and personal influence.
Stand firm. Make the hard decisions. Care for your people, but don’t become trapped by their opinions. A leader’s worth is proven by results, not by how many people call them friend. Let your work speak, let your values guide you, and let your impact speak.
We improve by learning.
